Leonard Cohen şi-a scris şi cântat propriul Kadiş (rugăciunea pentru morţi) în „You want it darker” din ultimul lui album, apărut cu două luni înainte de a muri. Este o cugetare cu accente religioase despre condiţia omului, o litanie care oscilează între resemnare şi revoltă mocnită. Cohen îi adresează lui Dumnezeu eterna plângere a omului în faţa nedreptăţii şi a suferinţei din lume, dar găseşte puterea de accepta lumea aşa cum e: Hineni, hineni/I’m ready, my Lord, cântă el, smerit şi împăcat. Hineni este cuvântul în ebraică pentru „Iată-mă!”, răspunsul lui Abraham la cerinţa de a-şi sacrifica fiul iubit, pe Isaac, în episodul biblic cel mai tulburător din Geneză.

Seninătatea o cucereşte după îndoieli, reproşuri şi amărăciune. It’s written in the scriptures/ And it’s not some idle claim/ You want it darker/ We kill the flame (Aşa stă scris în scriptură/Și nu este o pretenţie în van/Tu vrei să fie mai întunecat/Noi stârpim lumina). Sarcasmul abia camuflat se dizolvă în înţelegerea profundă din Hineni, în sensul de “Iată-mă, sunt aici, sunt gata să fac ce doreşti.”

Vocea adânca a lui Cohen devine expresia durerii omului încleştat într-o situaţie fără ieşire. Din nou răbufneşte revolta şi indignarea: I didn’t know I had permission to murder and to maim… If thine is the glory, mine must be the shame, (Nu ştiam că am permisiunea să ucid şi să schilodesc… Dacă ţie îţi revine gloria, mie îmi revine ruşinea), ca la sfârşit să se împrăştie în versul „Magnified, sanctified, be thy holy name” (Fie ca numele tău sfânt să fie slăvit, divinizat). Sugrumată de tristeţe, cu o cadenţă funebră, vocea suferindă a poetului se împleteşte cu vocile corului de bărbaţti al comunităţii Shaar Hashomayim de la sinagoga din Montreal, unde Cohen a crescut şi a fost Bar Mitzvah. În final, implorarea intonată de cantorul Gideon Zelermyer se înalţă într-un cântec de slavă.

I wanted to stand with those who clearly see G-d’s holy broken world for what it is, and still find the courage or the heart to praise it, (Am vrut să stau cu cei care văd lumea sfântă şi alterată a lui Dzeu aşa cum este ea şi care totusi găsesc curajul şi inima să o slăvească), a spus odată bardul, iar în cântecul lui de lebădă a ţinut sa ne exprime aceeaşi idee într-o formă deosebit de cutremurătoare.  Este una din cele mai fascinante şi ambigue piese pe care Leonard Cohen le-a produs vreodată. E evreiască şi universală. E obsedantă. Te trec fiorii şi ţi se strânge inima, dar o asculţi în mod Repeat.
